A Primer on Immediate Implants

Visit Azzawi Dental Aesthetic whether you want to let your dental implants heal and fuse with the bone tissue or fix a temporary prosthesis on the same day as the dental implant placement. Same-day implants, also known as immediate implants, are possible in some cases.

Keep reading to know who’s suitable for same-day implants and what to expect during the procedure.

Immediate Implants - Dr. Azzawi Dental Clinic in Vienna

Immediate Implants: Pros, Cons, and Suitable Candidates

We can only determine whether you’re a suitable candidate for immediate implants after an in-person or online consultation. Generally, same-day implants are recommended for the following clients:

  • Time-sensitive procedure
  • Cost-sensitive procedure
  • Those with missing or damaged teeth.
  • Those who suspect they might lose their teeth.
  • Those who want to do it all during one oral surgery instead of several.

You’re a good candidate for immediate implants if the following apply to you:

  • You have healthy gums.
  • You don’t smoke.
  • You only need to replace a couple of teeth.

Advantages of Immediate Implants

The potential benefits of same-day implants are quite obvious. You won’t have to deal with dentures while waiting for the placement to heal or undergo multiple surgeries, which could save you a lot of money because your health insurance doesn’t completely cover your dental implants.

Disadvantages of Immediate Implants

Immediate implants aren’t without their downsides. For one, don’t get them if your primary reason for doing so is to avoid follow-up visits. Follow-ups are mandatory for all dental procedures, including same-day implants, because you’ll have to return for your permanent prosthesis. You also must avoid using the area with the temporary crown for chewing during this time.

Same Day Dental Implants

Same-Day Implants: The Four-Step Procedure

Below are usually the steps we take for same-day implants.

  • Extraction

Your immediate implants don’t have to involve extraction. That can be done weeks before the main procedure. However, you can also do it on the same day if the condition of your jawbone and the extraction socket allows it.

  • Dental Implant Placement

The placement can take a few minutes  or more, depending on how many implants need to be placed. The anesthesia we administer will also depend on this factor and your pain threshold and anxiety level. The socket is, of course, prepared before the implants are placed.

  • Temporary Prosthesis

The temporary prosthesis is placed in lieu of a more permanent crown. In rarer cases, we fit you with the permanent crown on the same day, changing the nature of your follow-up visit. Again, this will depend on the previously-mentioned factors.

  • Follow-Up Visits

You must attend follow-up checkups over the next four to six months to ensure the dental implants are fusing with the jawbone and healing nicely. If your prosthesis were temporary, you’d have to return within a week or so for the permanent fixture.
